Definition

For a field extension

The Galois group of a field extension is defined as the automorphism group of the field extension.

For a polynomial

The Galois group of a separable polynomial (or more generally, a polynomial all of whose irreducible factors are separable) is defined as the Galois group of the splitting field of that polynomial.
